European Privacy Watchdog Forms ChatGPT Task Force

Date:

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) recently announced the formation of a ChatGPT Task Force in order to create a common policy for artificial intelligence privacy and to enforce the investigation into potential data breaches by ChatGPT. This is in response to Italy’s unilateral move in curtailing ChatGPT and the announcement from Germany’s data protection commissioner that they too will follow suit with similar measures to protect user privacy and data.

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) program, has gained widespread attention across the world due to its feature that enables it to answer a wide range of questions in extremely quick time frames. This has led to concerns about potential harm to the job market, personal security, and privacy.

With the EDPB task force, the organization will foster greater cooperation between national data protection watchdogs, so they can create a unified policy position regarding the use of AI technologies and secondly, exchange information regarding any potential enforcement actions. This initiative is driven by the preliminary investigation of OpenAI, the parent organisation of ChatGPT, by Italy’s Dataprotection Authority.

The taskforce is made of up related policy experts, instead of decision makers, who will present their own personal opinions and thoughts on the matter. This means that any decisions regarding France or other member states will take some time to come.

The primary objective of the Committee is not to merely punish OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, but to craft policies and rules that are transparent, consistent, and open for all involved parties. OpenAI is backed by giant tech company Microsoft Corp.

The EDPB is an independent organisation that is responsible for the administration, monitoring and enforcement of data protection rules across the European Union. The organisation consists of national data protection watchdogs and is an important factor when it comes to protection of user data and privacy across the continent.

Overall, the task force’s formation is an important step towards creating and implementing a common artificial intelligence policy across the European Union. As of right now, the process of coming to a unified consensus is still ongoing and it is unclear when a common policy will be officially enforced.
