Europe’s privacy watchdog, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), is creating a dedicated task force to discuss ChatGPT, an AI program that has attracted attention for its capacity to answer a wide range of queries quickly on the web. The task force aims to foster cooperation between different countries and exchange information on possible enforcement actions by data protection authorities, after Italy’s unilateral move to limit ChatGPT last month.
ChatGPT, owned by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, is the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with over 100 million monthly active users. This has caused concern amongst experts, U.S. government and other European governments, as well as raising questions regarding the safety, privacy and job threats it may pose.
As the task force begins to lay the groundwork for a common policy on AI and privacy, the Spanish AEPD watchdog has announced that it will launch a preliminary investigation into ChatGPT’s potential data breaches.
The EDPB is an independent body based in the European Union that enacts data protection rules. The body is comprised of national data protection watchdogs from each EU nation. While the task force may have a long way to go before creating a policy that all countries agree on regarding AI and privacy, having an opportunity for the members to discuss and exchange information is a crucial first step.
OpenAI is the company that produces ChatGPT and other technologies. Founded in 2018, it is a scientific research organization dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, as well as creating awareness about potential risks associated with them. Led by global innovators like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI or the ability of machines to digest data, understand it, learn and form its own decisions) is advanced responsibly and safely.
Sam Altman is President of OpenAI and a successful angel investor in well-known startups like Airbnb and Dropbox. He has extensive experience in the field of AI and executive teams, as well as a deep understanding of the need to make sure AI systems are developed responsibly and safely. Serving as an advocate for responsible AI, Altman is determined to ensure the technology’s positive impact on the world.
