The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has set up a ChatGPT task force to create regulations on the artificial intelligence (AI) platform. This is following the recent temporary ban on the tool in Italy, due to the apparent data breach and privacy issues. In response, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, was asked by the Italian data protection agency Garante to align with the privacy rules. Germany’s regulator too passed a similar statement, expressing that it could follow suit. To further Indicate the seriousness of the concern, the Spanish Data Protection Authority has Agathita started an investigation into the privacy breaches done with the use of ChatGPT. Adding to this, the French data protection agency, Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) received five complaints from users, with one of them coming from an MP.
Since its launch at the end of last year, ChatGPT has seen an impressive success that has led to over 100 million monthly users all over the world. Big tech firms such as JP Morgan and Klarna have already taken action by banning or plugging in the tool for their clients.
The EDPB’s move to create a task force reflects their commitment to maintain the users’ privacy while dealing with AI-based technology. In the official statement, they wrote, “The EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement action taken by the Italian data protection authority against OpenAI about the ChatGPT service. The EDPB decided to launch a dedicated task force to foster cooperation and to exchange information on possible enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities.”
OpenAI, the company that made ChatGPT, is a research laboratory based in San Francisco, CA. It was co-founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman in late 2015 to develop and advance artificial intelligence technology. With over 200 employees and an impressive list of investors, the company is one of the most successful in the AI space.
Sam Altman, the current CEO of OpenAI, has been a strong proponent of artificial intelligence technology. He is a computer scientist, businessman and investor and has focused on the efforts of AI research and development. He has also taken part in several initiatives that seek to further understanding of and build a framework in AI technology.
