The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) recently announced the launch of a task force to investigate ChatGPT, an AI-based generative chatbot. The announcement follows Italy’s decision to lift a ban on ChatGPT, which was placed on it by the country’s data protection authority due to non-compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The EDPB is an independent body founded by the European Union that is responsible for enforcing the GDPR. The decision to launch the task force was made after its members discussed the ban enforced by the Italian data protection authority. The task force will enable member states to exchange information on potential enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities.
Italian officials were concerned that ChatGPT was using personal data, such as phone numbers and addresses, which had been scraped from the internet, to train its AI platform. Additionally, the chatbot was reported to have the capability of making up fake stories about people with no accurate answer available. The Italian regulator determined that ChatGPT was processing this data without a legal basis.
In order to lift the ban, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, was required to comply with a set of rules by April 30 that would protect the privacy of their users. According to sources at one of the national watchdogs, member states are seeking to create policy positions that will protect the privacy of their citizens but are not attempting to punish OpenAI or make rules to affect the ChatGPT platform.
