The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has set up a task force to address the potential problems of ChatGPT, a developing artificial intelligence technology. This task force is the first step to create a comprehensive policy on dealing with privacy and data protection related to AI. The EDPB is an independent body that works to uphold data protection regulations in the European Union, and the members of the task force are data protection authorities from member countries.
Most recently, the Italian Data Protection Authority took steps to limit the application of ChatGPT while the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has also announced that it will conduct an investigation into the potential breach of data by ChatGPT. German Commissioner for Data Protection is also reported to follow the same suit. Outside Europe, U.S. Government and many other have also aired out their worries over the growing adoption of applications like ChatGPT.
The task force set up by the EDPB has been discussed during the EDPB’s members’ meeting and experts have presented their opinions on how potential legal actions need to be taken. The task force is aimed at fostering collaboration between different countries’ data protection laws and exchanging information related to enforcement. The member countries are not looking to impose laws on the ChatGPT owner OpenAI but rather to create general policies that are clear and transparent.
Garnering attention from all over the world, OpenAI, a San Francisco based research laboratory founded by Elon Musk, builds open-source artificially intelligent machines and systems. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is considered to have a high impact on society and OpenAI is one of the leading players in this field. With their commitment to utilizing the power of AI to positively contribute to the world, OpenAI has been making headlines with their technology.
Recently, Elon Musk, Co-founder and Chief Scientist of OpenAI, said that ChatGPT is an expansive new language model which powers sophisticated applications, and they believe it will open up a wealth of possibilities in natural language processing and most of all, improve user experiences. Thus, it is important for the European Union and other governing bodies to ensure that there are appropriate regulations in place to protect the people’s data and privacy when making use of ChatGPT and other AI applications.
The EDPB’s task force comes in the right of time and will play a critical role in establishing a framework for tackling potential privacy violations by AI applications like ChatGPT. This will also ensure that these policies are participatory, equitable and responsible for every member in the European Union.
