European Commission Requires AI Chat Tools to Label Content for Transparency

The European Commission’s deputy head, Vera Jourova, has called for companies deploying generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Bard to label any content that has the potential to generate disinformation. Speaking on Monday, Jourova expressed concerns that bad actors and governments could exploit AI to create and disseminate fake information on a larger scale. She advised companies that have signed up to the EU Code of Practice to tackle disinformation, such as Microsoft, Google and Meta Platforms, to report on safeguards put in place to prevent abuse. Twitter, which recently left the Code, has been warned to expect greater regulatory scrutiny.
