Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has recently revealed an ambitious plan to shake up the AI industry with a new company – X.AI Corp. He plans to create a rival to OpenAI, the nonprofit software organisation he co-founded, and Microsoft-backed ChatGPT. Musk aims to offer a distinct third option in the AI world which he has dubbed TruthGPT, a ‘maximum truth-seeking’ AI software that seeks to uncover the nature of the universe.
Musk is aware of the challenge facing him, as he acknowledges that both OpenAI and Google have had a head start in creating their respective AI models. However, he also draws attention to the fact that OpenAI is for-profit, possibly inciting a lack of ethical considerations for its AI models, something hisTruthGPT will counter. This marks the second time Musk is associated with an AI project, as previously, he expressed his interest in setting up a truth-seeking AI via a tweeted proposal.
It was found that Musk had registered X.AI Corp earlier than he revealed the plans, thus hinting that the project has been in development for some time now. Musk has also taken on board a number of GPUs and recruited researchers from DeepMind, to work on an undisclosed AI project possibly related to Twitter.
Following his plans, earlier this month, Musk joined AI researchers who wrote an open letter addressed to the corporate world, calling for a pause on “giant AI experiments” which lack comprehensive understanding, predictability, and reliable control strategies. Musk is also said to have discussed the need for regulating AI with the former US President Barack Obama.
X.AI Corp is the name of Musk’s new company, which is yet to be revealed in full detail. However, it is safe to say that, what Tesla has done for the automobile industry, Musk and X.AI Corp could do for the AI industry. Musk will be looking to be a formidable contender in the AI world and offer users a distinct option and an ethical alternative, something his competitors currently lack.
