In an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, tech mogul Elon Musk expressed his fear of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and showed his intention to launch a platform called TruthGPT—an AI system meant to find out the true nature of the universe.
Musk talked about how Microsoft-backed OpenAI—co-founded by him in 2015—has shifted from open-source organization to a closed, profit-driven one. With TruthGPT, Musk aims to address this very concern. Besides, the billionaire entrepreneur noted in this interview that TruthGPT is “the best path to safety” amid the enormous uncertainty regarding AI’s capabilities.
This move of Musk isn’t unexpected either. Earlier this year, he took to Twitter and urged the “need” for TruthGPT. He has previously voiced his opinion against the political bias of chatGPT, also a pet-project of OpenAI.
In the interview, Musk spoke about “the need” to regulate AI organizations, stating how he discussed AI regulations with the former president of the US, Barack Obama. Musk further added, “We should have regulatory agencies”. His thoughts were not welcomed by Alphabet Inc.’s founder, Larry Page, as Larry doesn’t get along the idea of AI Safety.
Musk surely took his words seriously and assembled a team of researchers and engineers including high-powered NVIDIA Corp.’s graphics processing unit (GPU) processors boost in collecting as much data as possible for the project.
At the same time, Musk tried to take over OpenAI by himself, but the attempt was declined by Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI.
TruthGPT is yet another stance taken by the tech-maestro Musk which is sure to shake the AI industry. While the platform offers a means to restrain any imprudent utilization of AI, Musk’s ambition to weasel its way into OpenAI holds potential to open a future where we are governed by a “digital god”.
