Elon Musk Working to Create a Rival to OpenAI

Date:

Elon Musk’s ambition is truly remarkable. The billionaire tech entrepreneur is reported to be gathering the funds and resources together to assemble a team to create a competitor to OpenAI, a company that he had a hand in creating back in 2018. The goal is to create an AI company that is potentially capable of outdoing the current leader in the field, and there is some circumstantial evidence that this could be possible.

Mr Musk is attempting to recruit and fund this new endeavour by tapping into his network of contacts and investors. Igor Babuschkin, a former DeepMind employee, has been hired as part of this team, whilst the billionaire is thought to be in the process of putting Twitter under the umbrella of his own X Corp, potentially indicating some progress.

However, the task ahead is not going to be easy. OpenAI has achieved its success due to several years of work and investment and it has secured the attention of major tech companies with the level of research and development going on there. On top of this, Mr Musk’s rather public disregard for OpenAI’s approaches, most notably the concept of ethical guardrails, could be quite the deterrent for any potential recruits.

For the time being, there is no indication as to what value proposition this company might have. It could have something to do with Musk’s contention of interfering with natural technology enhanced free speech, and there are some suggestions that the language models being trained could be done so with the use of Twitter data. All in all, investors may well be understandably skeptical of Musk’s venture but it cannot be denied that his appointment will surely stir up the AI field.
