Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has revealed his ambitious plan to create a “maximum truth-seeking AI” he calls “TruthGPT.” Musk’s idea is to create an alternative to existing AI software that can better avoid potential destruction of humanity by a rogue algorithm. Musk discussed the idea in an interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson, where he likened the approach of caring for humanity to the way we protect chimpanzees.
He proposed an AI that seeks to understand the universe and its inhabitants, saying an AI designed with this purpose in mind is less likely to destroy humanity due to its importance within that universe. Musks likened this idea to humans preserving the habitat of chimpanzees and stated that an AI with this level of understanding would be a “maximum truth-seeking AI.”
Musk founded OpenAI, an AI software nonprofit, with the intention of using the ethical guidelines incorporated there to create the new AI. Musk’s concern with OpenAI is the possibility that the presence of profits could interfere with the ethics of the AI models they create, which is why he has pushed forward the idea of “TruthGPT” to ensure transparency. He also tweeted in February that, “What we need is TruthGPT,” as a way of calling attention to the risks associated with large-scale AI models created by Open AI.
In order to better control the development of these large-scale AI models, Musk and other AI researchers signed an open letter in March, urging companies to pause their giant AI experiments they cannot “understand, predict, or reliably control.”
Shortly after, Elon Musk founded X.AI, a new AI company focusing on creating AI models with a focus on understanding the universe and its resources. Musk’s primary goal with the new company is to ensure transparency in the development of all AI models, as well as to maximize truth-seeking in all aspects of development.
