Elon Musk, the billionaire technology mogul, recently stated plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform called “TruthGPT” to challenge the existing offerings from Microsoft and Google. He accused Microsoft-backed OpenAI, who developed ChatGPT, of “training the AI to lie” and mentioned that they’ve become a closed source, for-profit entity in close ties with Microsoft. Furthermore, he accused Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, of not taking AI safety seriously.
Musk’s goal is to create a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that aims to “understand the nature of the universe” and he believes it is unlikely to harm humans as we’re part of the universe. OpenAI and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
India has been poaching AI researchers from Google in order to form a startup that can compete with OpenAI. He recently registered X.AI Corp in Nevada with himself as the director and Jared Birchall from his family office as secretary.
Recently, Musk and a group of AI experts and industry MDs requested for a 6 month pause in the development of systems that surpass the power of OpenAI’s GPT-4, highlighting the potential risks of creating such systems. He also expressed his concern regarding the implications of creating supersmart AI, such as the ability to manipulate public opinions, and mentioned the need to regulate AI during his interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson.
As CEO of several prominent companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, Musk is not one to shy away from ambitious projects, including the venture to create his own Twitter, which he acquired for $44 billion last year.
