Elon Musk Reveals Plans to Create a Rival to Microsoft-Backed ChatGPT Tool

Date:

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced his plans to launch an AI project rival to Microsoft-backed ChatGPT. The platform, “TruthGPT” as he calls it, is intended to challenge the offerings of Microsoft and Google by criticizing their lack of openness and understanding about the potential risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, Musk said, “I’m going to start something which I call ‘TruthGPT’, or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe…And I think this might be the best path to safety, in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe, it is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.” He also accused Larry Page, co-founder of Google, of not taking AI safety seriously.

Musk recently registered a firm named X.AI Corp in Nevada which he manages with the help of his family office. It is said that he has also been poaching AI researchers from Alphabet Inc’s Google to launch his project and compete with OpenAI, an AI platform backed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Having co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but having stepped down from the board of directors in 2018, it is clear that Musk remains determined to make progress in the AI space and challenge the competition. His warning about AI, however, still stands. According to a statement in the interview, AI is “more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production” and “has the potential of civilizational destruction.”
