Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and Twitter, recently revealed plans to develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. Calling it TruthGPT, the chatbot will be a “maximum truth-seeking AI” competing against the popular ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Musk made these remarks during a Fox News show following an open letter he signed three weeks ago urging a six-month pause in the advancement of AI systems.
Musk’s concerns echo that of other prominent individuals such as Mark Cuban and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who voice worries around the potential AI technology could have in causing harm. Similarly, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai noted that chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard have the capability to “hallucinate” and give responses that are factually inaccurate.
TruthGPT’s intended purpose is to be a more ethical alternative in that it only produces truth results. The project has a for-profit status and is incorporated under the new startup Musk recently founded, X.AI. Though the timeline for TruthGPT is uncertain, as Musk has a history of starting and then abandoning projects, it is his hope that creating a third option may be a safer solution to the risks of AI advancement.
