Elon Musk on OpenAI, Why It Has Gone Closed-Source and Now For-Profit

Date:

Elon Musk, co-founder of the artificial intelligence research lab OpenAI, revealed in a recent interview with Fox News that he took his “eye off the ball” when it came to OpenAI and this has led the company to stray from its original open-source, non-profit ideals. When OpenAI first launched, its purpose was to be a counterweight against Google, but since Musk’s departure from the board in 2018, OpenAI has become a closed-source and for-profit company, with Microsoft having a “very strong say” in its operations.

In another interview with The Verge last month, OpenAI co-founder and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever explained that they believe at some point in the future, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will become too powerful to be open-sourced. He also added that in the future, it will be “completely obvious to everyone that open-sourcing AI is just not wise.”

Musk had made his criticisms of OpenAI known in the past too. He said in February that OpenAI was “not what I intended at all” and went on to describe it as a “closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.”

OpenAI was founded in 2015 by some of the brightest minds in AI including Elon Musk and researchers from Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, and OpenAI. The research lab’s main focus was the creation of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a type of AI that can work on any kind of task, rather than just one specific task. Additionally, OpenAI was also a major force behind the development of its AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT as well as its recently launched capped-profit hybrid model.
