Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, Inc. and Twitter, made some remarks about his venture OpenAI that didn’t match his original expectations. On “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Fox News Channel, he stated that he regretted not having as much direct involvement with OpenAI as it has since changed from an open-source resource to a for-profit, closed-source software. He shared that he had created OpenAI as a counterweight to Google, and that he was aware that Microsoft had a large influence in the company.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, was founded by Musk and others in 2015. In a 2019 interview with The Verge, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist, Ilya Sutskever, addressed the firm’s shift away from open-sourcing its full technology stack. He stated that they believed artificial general intelligence (AGI) will become incredibly powerful in the future, and it would therefore not be wise to open-source it.
Furthermore, Musk has made negative comments about the company ever since he left its board in 2018. He predicted that it would soon be obvious to everyone why open-sourcing AI was not a good idea. As of 2021, OpenAI remains closed sourced, has “capped-profit” model and is closely allied with Microsoft.
