Elon Musk, billionaire tech mogul and CEO of SpaceX, has announced his intention to launch a new artificial intelligence (AI) product to counter the politically-biased chatbot ChatGPT created by OpenAI. His product, “TruthGPT”, intends to combine human values with AI to create a product that both understands and respects humanity. Musk also stirred controversy when he accused Larry Page, co-founder of Google, of not taking AI safety seriously.
In an interview on Fox News, Musk claimed that his TruthGPT project “might be the best path to safety” because it is less likely to annihilate humans. While he hasn’t revealed much information on how TruthGPT differ from existing AI models, the tentative mission statement of this project is to create an AI that can “Understand the nature of the universe”. This project has already kicked off legally with the firm named X.AI Corp.
These developments come in response to Microsoft’s recent bid to acquire OpenAI which raised triple anti-trust threats from its competitors. OpenAI is a nonprofit AI research lab that created ChatGPT which has become an extremely popular virtual assistant. Interestingly, Musk was a part of the OpenAI team when it made its initial promising step in the pursuit of ethical AI with the creating of GPT-4, and then resigned from the board after noting that OpenAI was increasingly becoming a for-profit entity heavily associated with Microsoft.
Elon Musk is a renowned leader in the tech industry, playing key roles within SpaceX and Tesla. He is one of the original sources of funding for OpenAI, an AI research lab committed to exploring the ethical and safety risks of AI. Since then, he also has some ideas of his own on how to make AI a safer and beneficial tool that could foster human progress.
