Twitter owner, Elon Musk has recently revealed new plans in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). He is set to launch a new startup, X.AI, that will stand in competition to OpenAI, the AI-based chatbot platform founded by Microsoft. The company has received funding from SpaceX and Tesla investors. It has been incorporated on 9 March, 2023.
Musk was one of the founders of OpenAI in 2015, where he also served as a co-chair. Later in 2018, he stepped down from the board and has since expressed worries that the organisation wasn’t making the best use of AI advancements, claiming it had rules “effectively controlled by Microsoft”. Furthermore, he has signed a report urging for a pause in the progress of AI systems, which he argued could potentially pose risks to humanity due to their powerful capabilities.
In contradiction to those statements, he has recently purchased thousands of graphic processing units to develop an AI-based product, the ChatGPT. This is a chatbot that is reportedly capable of performing stock-forecasting, according to The Verge. Moreover, a few days ago Instagram released Reels, a new feature which includes AI-underpinned features, as found out in The Verge’s report.
All in all, Elon Musk is proving that he is heavily engaging with the AI industry, by forming a new startup and investing in the building of powerful products. X.AI could be a game-changer in the AI industry, and it will certainly be interesting to keep an eye on its updates and improvements, as the field evolves.
