Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, appears to have plans to challenge OpenAI in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is evidenced by the incorporation of an entity called X.AI in Nevada by Musk and his family office’s operator, Jared Birchall. A Nevada state filing referencing the company indicates that it was set up in March, although the company’s purpose is not listed.
A recent report from Igor Babuschkin, a former employee at Alphabet Inc’s DeepMind, claims that Musk had discussed building an AI research laboratory to compete with OpenAI. This could form part of Musk’s long-term vision to create a ‘superapp’ and merge Twitter into a parent corporation called X Corp. This ambition has been commented on and suggested by the tech entrepreneur himself.
This week, it was revealed that the billionaire was allegedly assisting Tesla and SpaceX shareholders to finance an AI startup. According to the Financial Times, Musk had purchased various computer processors from Nvidia Corporation for the proposed venture. This information caused shares of the chipmaker to increase.
Last month, Musk and a number of other researchers and tech industry leaders had called for a pause on training powerful AI models. He was among the founders at OpenAI and served as a co-chair with Sam Altman, the current CEO. However, he left the board in 2018 and has expressed his difference of opinion with the organisation. According to him, OpenAI is being ‘effectively controlled’ by Microsoft Corporation and is ‘training AI to be woke’. Altman responded to this criticism in a podcast, calling Musk a ‘jerk’ while also admitting that he was worried about the future of humanity.
X.AI is a startup that is focused on developing Artificial Intelligence-based products and services. With the help of smart algorithms and machine learning, the company provides highly customized and comprehensive AI-driven services for employees and businesses. The startup works to address complex and tedious tasks that are usually time-consuming and expensive. It also provides real-time insights and updates to its users, delivering the most accurate information. X.AI has offices in Berlin, San Francisco, and London.
Jared Birchall is a Canadian entrepreneur who currently serves as the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Obvious Ventures. He has several years of experience in various industries in the US and Canada, including finance, technology, entertainment and retail. Birchall is also the operator of Musk’s family office and was instrumental in incorporating X.AI in March. He has been praised for his highly competent and proficient business acumen, which enabled him to secure the incorporation of X.AI in the state of Nevada.
