Elon Musk’s battle against Twitter bots doesn’t appear to be making much headway, with the level of bot activity on the platform remaining largely unchanged, according to cybersecurity company Cheq. The firm found that roughly 12% of ad traffic was driven by bots in Q1 2020 and Q1 2021. Although Musk’s Twitter Blue subscription service was supposed to tackle the issue, it doesn’t seem to have done so yet. In an attempt to combat bots further, the tech billionaire intends to release an update that will allow only verified users, who pay $8 a month, to send DMs to accounts that don’t follow them. In April, Musk also appeared to offer a $1m bounty to convict bot network masterminds.
