Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and tech-industry luminary, is scoping out a new artificial intelligence (AI) venture that aims to rival the computer language model company OpenAI. Sources who are a close part of the project disclosed to Financial Times, that the billionaire has assembled a team of AI researchers and engineers and has already purchased thousands of Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) GPUs to power the project—the same ones used to power OpenAI’s ChatGPA.
The purpose and specifics of the venture have not been made clear and Elon Musk has yet to comment on the situation. He has, however, reportedly pitched the idea to investors that work with his other technologically-driven ventures, including SpaceX and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA). People who have heard of the proposed business are said to be excitedly supportive of the project.
The project also follows verbal criticism Elon Musk made against OpenAI after it became a “$30B market cap for-profit” with his specifically intended non-profit $100 million donation. He has also been concerned and vocal about the use of AI, signing an open letter to call for an international regulation of the technology for a span of six months.
OpenAI currently has Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) as its largest investor and other noteworthy investors such as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU). His soon-to-be venture is likely to trigger competition in the field and lift the monopolization of the technology.
Elon Musk is a South African-born American business magnate, founder, inventor and investor. He has also founded several other technology-driven businesses, such as The Boring Company and Neuralink and was an early investor in companies like PayPal, Zip2 and X.com. He is well-known for his stances on renewable energy, autonomization and AI technology.
