Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is building a revolutionary AI system that he hopes will be more ‘truth seeking’ than the popular ChatGPT tool from OpenAI. In an interview with Fox News, Musk explained that this AI is being developed to ‘understand the nature of the universe’, believing that such understanding could lead to AI safety and be the best possible path.
Musk has long been vocal about his worries towards the potential dangers of AI and has criticized OpenAI and other AI development projects. He noted the irony of his involvement in the investment of OpenAI, raising further concern with their intentions. To further his mission of truth and safety, he is launching X.AI, an AI company that will also be competing in the generative AI market.
In an effort to keep AI safe, Musk was one of many signatories who signed an open letter calling for a six-month standstill on AI development. This letter was met with significant scrutiny, and some claims of fake signatures. The organization behind the call for the moratorium is mostly funded by the Musk Foundation.
To emphasise his activity with AI, Musk recently merged Twitter Inc. into X Corp, indicating his bigger plans for creating an AI ‘all-in-one’ app, similar to China’s WeChat.
Elon Musk is a highly influential figure in the world of technology and innovation. From running SpaceX, Tesla, and now X.AI, he has been heavily involved and invested in the advancements of AI and has been actively encouraging the development of safe AI systems. While controversial at times, it is evident that he is dedicated to achieving the goal of enhanced AI safety and truth-seeking AI capabilities. Faith in this venture can be traced back to his track-record of successful business ventures, indicating that X.AI could very well be the next big development in AI.
