Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, recently confirmed his plans of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to rival Microsoft’s ChatGPT. Dubbed “TruthGPT,” Musk promises to make the code of his AI system open sourced, which would offer an alternative to the closed-source company module powered by Microsoft. The project is the brainchild of Musk’s involvement in OpenAI, though he stepped away when founders refused his offer to take over the research.
With the launching of GPT-4 with trillions of data points, ChatGPT has come with its own share of criticisms, including biases against certain opinions, difficulty understanding certain contexts, and inaccurate detection of typos. Microsoft is also facing a potential GDPR violation investigation in Europe due to the recently implemented ban on the chatbot in the country.
Musk’s goal for the new AI system is to become the safest form of artificial intelligence – one that he believes is unlikely to annihilate humanity. Expected to compete against ChatGPT rival Google’s Bard, Musk was also critical of Google co-founder Larry Page’s efforts in advancing AI safety.
In light of these recent developments, Musk has called for the global AI industry to join forces and draft ethical regulations on AI technology. His desire is for a better chance of advanced AI having a positive effect on humanity, by providing the industry with guidelines that each company is to abide by.
OpenAI is a nonprofit research laboratory co-founded by Elon Musk and is backed by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston and Ilya Sutskever. It focuses on artificial intelligence research and its work has been immensely influential in the field. Moreover, the company has had success in building, training, and deploying advanced AI models in both natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision. OpenAI has generated enthusiasm and attracted many high-level researchers, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and other prominent technology leaders.
Tucker Carlson, a Fox News broadcaster, also conducted an interview with Musk on April 17th, where the Tesla CEO discussed his plans for TruthGPT and his criticisms of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.During the talk, Musk addressed the risks surrounding AI and how he could address this with the development of a transparent and open source AI model. Musk also pointed out the potential problem of ChatGPT’s perceived political biases after it created a poem praising President Biden, despite declining to honor President Trump. Additionally, he highlighted the need for better AI safety regulations, suggesting the formation of a council to provide this.
In light of Elon Musk’s recent announcement, the future of AI could be changing for the better, with the potential for a more open technology industry between tech companies. Musk’s plans for an open-source AI system that respects and enforces ethical regulations could revolutionize the landscape of artificial intelligence. But first, we’ll have to wait and see what happens when TruthGPT is launched to the public.
