Elon Musk is making plans to rival artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI by incorporating an entity called X.AI in the state of Nevada. A Nevada State filing with the Secretary of State shows the incorporation took place in March with Musk and Jared Birchall, his family office operator, listed as the incorporators of X.AI. While the document does not specify the company’s purpose, Musk has expressed ambitions to develop an “everything app” which could accelerate his AI goals called X.
Recently, there have been reports that Musk is in talks with investors of Tesla, Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to fund an AI-startup. Reports suggest that the billionaire has acquired thousands of chips from Nvidia Corporation for the project. It is still unknown what the startup would be used for, but the news of it has helped sparked investor interest in Nvidia stocks.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has often expressed criticisms of OpenAI, the highest-profile AI startup. Last February, a tech news site reported that Musk was reaching out to researchers to build a research lab that could rival ChatGPT and Dall-E creation. Igor Babuschkin, a former employee from Alphabet Inc.’s DeepMind, has mentioned he had discussions with Musk about forming a team.
Musk is also addressing his concerns about training powerful AI models, by teaming up with a group of AI professionals to call for a pause in model training. In an aim to invest in AI safety, Musk was involved early on in the creation of OpenAI in 2015, with Sam Altman, the current CEO. Developments of X.AI and the startup could be part of Musk’s long-term ambitions to develop an “everything app” that would benefit humanity.
X.AI is a Nevada-based startup founded by tech tycoon Elon Musk that aims to pursue his artificial intelligence ambitions. Musk and his family office operator, Jared Birchall, both incorporated X.AI in March of this year and the Nevada State filing with the Secretary of State mentioned their involvement. It is not yet known what the company’s purpose is but Musk has expressed his hopes to develop a superapp, merging Twitter into a parent corporation called X Corp.
It is believed that Musk has been holding discussions with investors of Tesla, Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to fund an AI-startup. Reportedly, the billionaire has already purchased thousands of processors from Nvidia Corporation to use for the project.

The development of X.AI as well as the startup could be an indication of Musk’s long-term ambition to create an “everything app” to benefit humanity. This goal is being advanced further by Musk’s efforts in pushing for a pause in the training of powerful AI models.
The news of the incorporation of X.AI coincides with Sam Altman, the current CEO of OpenAI, calling Musk a “jerk” while also noting his concerns on what the future may look like for humanity. Musk was involved in the early stages of creating OpenAI but eventually left its board in 2018. Musk had expressed worries that OpenAI was becoming “effectively controlled by Microsoft”-which has invested 10 billion dollars in OpenAI- because of it becoming more for-profit oriented when it formed a for-profit wing in 2019.
X.AI’s development could potentially result in a bigger progress in the AI industry, which would ultimately benefit humanity as a whole. With investors expressing an interest in Musk’s development and him pushing for a pause in training of powerful AI models, humankind can still be rest assured that AI technology is safe. Musk’s experiment with the X.AI project is still in its early stages and what it will ultimately become is still unknown.
