Elon Musk Announces Plans to Start Rival to Microsoft-Backed ChatGPT

Date:

Elon Musk, the billionaire and cofounder of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced plans to launch a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform, TruthGPT, that will challenge the offerings from the Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Musk accused OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, of training the AI to lie, claiming it has become a closed source, for-profit organization allied with Microsoft. He also criticized Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, for not taking AI safety seriously.

Musk plans to launch the “maximum truth-seeking AI” platform, which he believes will be the best path to safety in the sense that it is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe. He also said in an interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson that AI has the potential of civilizational destruction.

In the interview, Musk also said to have met with former U.S. President Barack Obama and warned him that Washington needed to encourage AI regulation. In a tweet he mentioned that he left OpenAI to focus on Tesla and SpaceX, and other reasons were that Tesla and OpenAI were competing for the same people and he did not see eye to eye with OpenAI’s vision.

Last month, Musk registered a firm named X.AI Corp, which he is the sole director of and Jared Birchall, managing director of Musk’s family office, as a secretary. This comes after Musk joined a group of AI experts and leaders in the tech industry who called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4, due to potential risks to society.

In January, Microsoft Corporation announced a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI that further intensified competition with Google, as the race to attract Artificial Intelligence funding to Silicon Valley continues. Based on Elon Musk’s tweet, he values Twitter, which he bought for $44 billion, at less than half the acquisition price.

OpenAI, a research laboratory founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and Peter Thiel, concentrates on natural language processing research, in the fields of Machine Learning, Robotics and other related categories. The OpenAI Charter states the company’s mission as the development of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) with humanity’s goal in mind being an AI system that has a greater than human-level intelligence.

Elon Musk is one of the most influential and revolutionary people in the world today. With accomplishments ranging from groundbreaking developments in private spaceflight to pioneering electric automobiles, Elon Musk has changed the conversation in technological advancement and scientific discovery. He has founded a number of companies, including Tesla, PayPal, and The Boring Company. Musk has also become CEO of Twitter and continues to be a huge force for innovation.
