Elon Musk, the visionary CEO and entrepreneur, made a shocking revelation recently when he said that he was planning to launch a rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s chatbot sensation ChatGPT. During an interview with Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, Musk criticized OpenAI of “training the AI to lie” and also voiced his objection to the “closed source” and “for-profit” nature of the organisation that he believes is closely tied to Microsoft. The news came shortly after Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, was accused of not taking AI safety seriously.
In response to this, Musk announced the development of “TruthGPT” or a maximum “truth-seeking AI” that he believes will guide humankind to safety without the risk of annihilating the human race. He said he was creating “a third option” in response to OpenAI’s initiative. Representatives from Elon Musk, Microsoft, OpenAI and Larry Page respectively have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comments.
In addition to this revelation, it has been reported that Musk has been poaching AI researchers from Google to start a competing company to OpenAI. He has recently registered X.AI Corp in Nevada, as noted in state filing.
The announcement of “TruthGPT” came just after Musk and a group of AI professionals, together with industry executives, appealed for a six-month standstill on the development of more powerful AI systems that are above OpenAI’s recently released GPT-4. The plea was made in consideration of the threats to society such advanced AI systems could pose.
