Dispute Around Using AI to Enhance Job Search Results – Is It a Risk or Reward?

Date:

In the job search process, a growing debate is taking place around the use of AI. A survey conducted by Wakefield Research in March for the talent-cloud company iCIMS revealed that 39% of HR and recruitment professionals see the use of AI bots such as ChatGPT for cover letters or résumés as a definite dealbreaker. Another survey of college seniors in March found that 47% are interested in using AI bots for their resumes and cover letters, and 25% already use them.

Though some HR professionals and recruiters are okay with the use of such tools, they still want to see a job candidate’s authentic self and how they approach interviews. Career coach and business owner Mandy Tang has experienced firsthand the use of AI-generated cover letters. Even though the cover letter she received was tailored to the job description, it seemed too perfect and she thought it may have been AI-generated. Despite this, she decided to move on and hired three better-qualified job applicants.

Bing even discourages job seekers from using it to write a résumé, as it stated it would be unethical and unfair to other applicants. Similarly, when Rebecca Knight used ChatGPT to help shape her résumé, the results offered no real improvement.

Doug Ebertowski, former career expert at FlexJobs, said hiring managers can spot canned responses easily and they want to see that the job applicant has taken time to think carefully about who they are. On the other hand, Sandy Torchia from KPMG suggested that AI tools can be beneficial if used correctly and job applicants should personalize what the bot gives them. Lisa Frank believes having skills in ChatGPT and other AI tools can set job applicants apart from the competition and might even be beneficial in the workplace, as it can help with productivity.
