Delhi Police Urges Meta for URL to Deepfake Video of Actress Rashmika Mandanna
The Delhi Police has reached out to Meta, the parent company of social media giant Facebook, requesting the URL of the account responsible for sharing a deepfake video of popular Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna. The move comes after the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the incident.
Deepfake videos have become a growing concern as they involve the use of artificial intelligence to manipulate existing images or videos, replacing one person’s likeness with another. In this case, Mandanna’s face was superimposed onto the original video, which was believed to belong to a British-Indian influencer.
Hemant Tiwari, DCP of the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit, revealed that the Delhi Police has also sought information about the individuals who shared the fake video on social media. We have written to Meta to access the URL ID of the account from which the video was generated. We have also started conducting technical analysis, stated Tiwari.
The FIR filed in this matter includes charges under sections 465 and 469 of the Indian Penal Code, which deal with forgery, as well as sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act. This action was taken by the police after a complaint was lodged by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), which initiated the case after taking note of the deepfake video.
To crack the case, a specialized team of officers has been assigned to carry out the investigation. The authorities are optimistic that they will make significant progress in a timely manner. The actress and her team have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
