Christopher David recently used ChatGPT and Midjourney to create mouthwatering Filipino dishes which are nonexistent hence far. He posted the generated images in a Facebook group called ‘Midjourney Official’, dubbing the dishes as “lost dishes of the Philippines”.
ChatGPT was employed by him to create dish names that sounded like Filipino words while referencing Filipino dishes’ naming patterns. He furthermore fed the made-up recipes into Midjourney, resulting in dishes such as Tinikim na Manok. The dish consists of chicken and is garnished with calamansi, ginger, coconut milk, toasted coconut flakes and cilantro, served on white rice.
Talukab Gisa, another of the made-up recipes, is a combination of carabao meat and gisa, which is a term used for stir-frying. While the program made use of the correct term, it does not fit naturally in a Filipino phrase and makes for an amusing title nonetheless.
The comments for the generated dishes were mixed – some were inspired by the creative use of AI, while some pointed out that similar dishes already exist in places like Iloilo. An example of the latter is Balaw Sapal, which is a soup of coconut milk, corn, young bamboo shoots and chicken, resembling Iloilo’s Tambo dish except for the absence of shellfish.
