Elon Musk has been pushing the limits of innovation to develop a new AI chatbot startup to rival OpenAI’s Conversational AI. As The Financial Times recently reported, the tech entrepreneur has been looking for investors in this venture and has even approached Tesla and SpaceX investors. However, the move could be seen as odd given that just weeks ago, Musk signed an open letter that called for a six-month pause in AI development until they’ve had time to consider the potential risks associated with such technology. This follows up with a tweet Musk made recently that stated “turning AI-designed fashion into real clothing would be great”, in an attempt to make light of the situation.
Elon Musk is an entrepreneur, investor and engineer who founded companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, OpenAI and Neuralink. He has continuously pushed the boundaries of science and technology with his innovative ventures and has been listed as Forbes’ third-richest individual with a net worth of over $42 billion. Musk is known for his ambitious projects and is one of the foremost leaders of the modern technological age.
OpenAI, which is a research laboratory and AI startup, has recently launched ChatGPT and GPT-4, for which Elon Musk was one of the founders. The development of these models will require Musk to gather expert home from DeepMind and other Artificial Intelligence labs and it was found out that Musk purchased 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to help in this venture.
Artificial Intelligence is set to bring us many promises and changes but at the same time it is important to be aware of the risks associated with it. The open letter asks the AI research community to review and monitor current Artificial Intelligence technology and assess the potential impact it could have on our world. The call for this action received a strong response and with Musk in a leadership position, the development of new AI tech could start having a real impact soon.
