Coursera Introduces ChatGPT-Powered Learning Tools

Date:

At their 11th annual conference in 2023, the popular online educational platform Coursera announced they would be adding ChatGPT-powered interactive educational tools to their existing platform. These include a generative AI coach for students and an AI course-building tool for teachers, as well as different features such as machine learning translations, virtual immersive learning experiences, and more.

Coursera Coach is a virtual AI assistant that acts as a virtual mentor for students. It provides feedback and assistance for students, as well as summarizing lectures and other materials, providing career advice and preparing students for job interviews. This tool will be launched to the public in coming months.

Meanwhile, teachers can use an AI-assisted course building tool with prompts to generate content, structure, descriptions, tags, readings, assignments, glossaries and recommend existing Coursera courses. This tool will be piloted with education partners over the course of 2023.

Addtionally, machine learning-powered translations at scale will provide students with access to thousands of texts, subtitled videos, quizzes, assessments, peer review instructions, and more. These translations will be available in Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Thai, and Indonesian.

Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera CEO, explained the immense potential generative AI presents for personalized and interactive learning. Employers are using AI and machine learning to improve customer service, thus creating greater demand for re-skilling. To meet this demand, Coursera has added new AI and machine learning-focused courses.

Additionally, Coursera is expanding its immersive learning opportunities with new VR course experiences. These are available to both audited and paid students and will contain a range of topics from public speaking, economics, mobility physics, language learning, and training for healthcare professionals. These experiences can be accessed on desktop or by most VR headsets.
