At the 11th annual conference of education company Coursera, held in 2023, the company announced that it is adding powerful ChatGPT-powered interactive ed tech tools to its learning platform. These include a generative AI coach for students, AI course-building tool for instructors, and machine learning-powered translation. Coursera is also incorporating virtual reality immersive learning experiences to significant embellish the course learning. Coursera also stated that this is being done to accommodate the rising demand for re-skilling due to advances in AI and machine learning.
Coursera Coach is ChatGPT virtual coach for learners that gives tailored feedback, interprets video lectures and other relevant content, provides career advice, and prepares them for job interviews. This particular feature is expected to be rolled out in the coming months. On the other hand, instructors can create courses with AI-assisted course building, input prompts to facilitate course content, tags, readings, assignments, and glossaries. This tool will be opined to a few selected education partners in 2023.
The machine learning-powered translation is set to help users make sense of a wealth of materials such as course readings, lecture video subtitles, quizzes, assessments, peer review instructions, and discussion prompts available on Coursera. The language support is now extended to Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Thai, and Indonesian to cater for 35 million registered learners from countries with these official languages. VR course experiences, spread across Duke, Peking University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Washington, have also been integrated for learners of all educational backgrounds to make learning more comprehensive and interactive.
Jeff Maggioncalda, the CEO of Coursera, pointed to the increasing relevance of AI and machine learning in skilling, which has led to this move. As a result, a number of new courses based on AI and machine learning have been made available to learners through the platform.
