Copycat ChatGPT Apps Capitalizing on AI Boom in App Stores

Date:

ChatGPT is the leading AI-based content generation tool on the market. Developed by OpenAI, a scientific research organization focused on developing artificial intelligence, ChatGPT has become the latest craze, with over 100 million monthly users. In order to capitalize on this success, OpenAI released an official ChatGPT mobile app earlier this week, and is soon set to launch a version for Android devices as well.

However, with its rise in popularity, a wave of copycats have flooded app stores, making it difficult for users to identify the real ChatGPT from the knockoffs. Most copycats have interchangeable names such as ChatAI and AI Chat, as well as similar logos, and mimic the same basic functionality that the original ChatGPT offers.

These copycats maycharge users for access to the bot and also many of these apps are also ‘fleeceware’ as they may impose hidden charges after a brief free trial. Apple and Google have taken measures to remove such ‘ deceptive marketing tricks’ apps from their app stores.

Apart from deceptive copycats, there are genuine alternatives that provide access to ChatGPT. Apps like GeePeeTee offer a more streamlined way to access the bot on iPhone while OpenAI also offers a $20-a-month(around £16) ‘pro’ subscription for its latest GPT-4 chatbot.

OpenAI also actively encourages developers to create tools using its standard AI system, known as the GPT-3.5 large-language model, which charges developers approximately $0.06 for 750 words of output.

However, users should be aware of deceptive copycats that get in the way of people seeking the real deal, and the importance of reading reviews and scanning for warning signs before downloading anyChatGPT-powered apps. To make sure they get the official version, iOS users should wait for OpenAI’s app to reach the UK shores.

Working with technology giants like Microsoft, six of the world’s leading technology companies, and numerous universities, OpenAI has made a name for itself as a leader in artificial intelligence, and the success of ChatGPT is a testimony to their hard work.
