Conversations with Former IBM CEO on Artificial Intelligence, Redundancies, and Women in Tech

Date:

Ginni Rometty is an inspiring example of a woman leader in the technology industry. With nearly four decades of experience at IBM, Rometty reached unimaginable heights when she became the company’s first female CEO in 2012. Additionally, her remarkable tenure saw the global giant become a front-runner in the global conversation about artificial intelligence (AI).

Her success, however, was not without learning curves; Rometty recounted the need to make hard decisions and make budget cuts that resulted in employee layoffs to adjust to new technological disruptions during her time at IBM. Now retired, Rometty took her time to reflect on the current debates and state of the tech industry with the Associated Press.

On the debate about student debt relief and the associated educational infrastructure, she remarks that institutions should not be the only pathway to success in America and that it is important that universities teach soft skills relevant to the career market. On AI, she states her concerns about the developments and the need to regulate its use as opposed to managing the technology itself.

Rometty was unsurprised by the magnitude of layoffs sweeping the tech industry and attributed it to the need for economical growth, noting the importance of efficiency in order to thrive in the modern climate. When asked about how Elizabeth Holmes’ recent conviction might affect the image of women in tech, Rometty insisted that it does not define the future and that everyone should gain insight from the experience but not be derailed.

In addition to these reflections, Rometty recently authored a book called “Good Power” which serves as a memoir with a purpose. It outlines her journey from her graduation from Northwestern University to her life-changing positions at IBM.
