College students are greatly impacted by the increasing presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their classrooms and job opportunities. On the Fox News show ‘The Story’, three students – Tabatha Fajardo, Jay Ram, and Kyra Varnavas – talked about the development of AI and its effect on education in the US. ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, is growing in popularity among the youth who can type a writing prompt and receive an essay back in minutes.
While AI technology can assist students by providing them with steps to completing math problems or offering ideas on a research project, there is a potential cause to worry as some may use it as a form of cheating. The Leadership Institute’s Campus Reform reported on a survey finding that a third of college students who responded admitted to using ChatGPT and other AI bots prompting debate on academic integrity.
Kyra Varnavas, a finance major from Fordham University, noted the employment opportunities AI technology created. In trading finance, the presence of algorithms can affect the job market and those currently looking for a job should take this into consideration. Furthermore, Tabatha Fajardo from Stony Brook University highlighted the importance of human connection in the advancement of AI technology as, no matter how advanced it becomes, it will never duplicate a human relationship.
Prospective job hunters today must have a robust understanding of the digital landscape and seek to continuously expand their skill-sets in order to keep their place in a competitive job market. With this in focus, an increasing number of college students are recognizing AI technologies and understanding the potential opportunities and challenges it poses. In addition, ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, brings a new wave of learning through an automated and real-time essay writing system. It created a way for students to save time and energy which can be utilized in other more beneficial activities.
