Gender bias in science continues to hinder the world’s ability to tap into great talent, according to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. In a message marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Guterres highlighted the systemic barriers and biases that prevent women and girls from pursuing careers in the field. He revealed that women make up only a third of the global scientific community, receive less funding compared to men, are underrepresented in publications, and hold fewer senior positions in major universities. In some regions, women and girls face limited or no access to education, which Guterres described as a violation of human rights.
Guterres emphasized the vital need for women and girls to participate equally in scientific discoveries and innovations, whether in climate change, health, or artificial intelligence. He stressed that inclusivity fosters innovation and ensures science benefits everyone. To address gender inequalities, Guterres called for the overcoming of stereotypes and the promotion of role models to encourage girls to pursue scientific careers. He also recommended the development of programs that support the advancement of women in science and the creation of work environments that nurture their talents, particularly those from minority groups.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated by UNESCO and UN Women, centers on the theme Closing the gender gap in science. UNESCO’s Call for Action provides recommendations to tackle the root causes of gender-based inequalities in science. The aim is to empower all women and girls, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5.
