Artificial intelligence (AI) and social media have the potential for abuse, according to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. He addressed this issue during the 60th convocation of IIT Madras, highlighting the challenges involved in preventing harmful usage. Justice Chandrachud emphasized the importance of curbing misuse in order to prioritize human values and individual privacy. While technology, such as social media, enables quicker communication and connects people across different age groups and nationalities, it has also given rise to online abuse and trolling. Similarly, AI can be misused to mislead, threaten, or bully individuals. The CJI stressed the need to address these challenges and ensure technology is used responsibly.
Justice Chandrachud reiterated that new technology cannot exist in a vacuum and should incorporate safeguards to protect users and their personal liberty. He emphasized that technology should not create fear or facilitate online abuse and harassment. Mentioning the example of AI recruitment tools showing discrimination or bias, the CJI highlighted the importance of making technology more inclusive, reliable, and affable.
However, the CJI also acknowledged the positive role of technology, citing the Supreme Court’s virtual hearings during the COVID-19 pandemic as an example. He mentioned that the court held 43 million virtual hearings while facilitating lawyers and litigants to appear before the court for the disposal of cases. This move towards inclusivity and access to justice was seen as a positive development.
Furthermore, Justice Chandrachud pointed out that the Supreme Court has launched an experimental AI system for transcription of live proceedings. This highlights the court’s effort to leverage technology to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
The Chief Justice’s cautionary remarks about the potential abuse of AI and social media bring attention to the need for responsible use of technology. While they have certainly revolutionized communication and connectivity, there is a pressing need to address the challenges arising from their misuse. By taking steps to prevent harmful usage and ensuring inclusivity, technology can truly serve as a valuable tool for society. The graduating students listening to Justice Chandrachud’s speech were urged to embrace technology responsibly and contribute to its positive and ethical development.
