Chongqing recently celebrated World Book Day in a unique way by introducing ten self-service book borrowing and returning machines across multiple subway stations in nine districts. This initiative, known as Palm-sized Books, was launched to provide free book borrowing services 24/7 to commuters, students, and tourists using the subway system in the city.
The project is a collaboration between the Chongqing Municipal Culture and Tourism Commission, Chongqing Rail Transit, local public libraries, and publishing institutions. The machines offer a wide range of books for both adults and children, covering diverse topics such as politics, economics, literature, history, geography, and popular science.
The official launch ceremony took place at the Zengjiayan Railway Station in Chongqing’s Yuzhong district, marking the beginning of this innovative program. A total of 20,000 books are currently available, with plans to install an additional forty machines by the end of June to cater to the growing demand.
Chongqing, known for its extensive urban rail transit network, boasts a 500-kilometer system that includes fifty subway stations across various lines. It is estimated that these intelligent book machines will serve over 100 million passengers annually, enhancing the reading culture among the city’s residents and visitors.
Moreover, the success of Palm-sized Books in the subway system has prompted discussions about expanding the program to the Chengdu-Chongqing High-Speed Railway in the near future. This move aims to promote literacy and encourage reading habits among a broader audience, providing convenient access to a diverse collection of books.
