Baidu’s groundbreaking Ernie Bot, which is reminiscent of ChatGPT, has skyrocketed to over 200 million users in just eight months, making it one of China’s most sought-after AI chatbots.
Since receiving official approval from the Chinese government last year, Ernie Bot has seen a substantial increase in popularity. The impressive user base includes over 85,000 business clients who are willing to pay a monthly fee to access this innovative AI tool. This number has more than tripled since December 2023 when Ernie Bot had 26,000 business users.
Ernie Bot, developed based on Baidu’s sophisticated language model Ernie, is among the first AI chatbots approved for public use in China. Companies in China must obtain government authorization before deploying generative AI tools, and Ernie Bot was among the pioneering eight models to receive approval initially.
Comparisons have been drawn between Ernie Bot and Western counterparts like ChatGPT and GalaxyAI, with Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, highlighting Ernie’s exceptional capabilities. In fact, Ernie performed impressively well in a head-to-head assessment against ChatGPT, excelling in solving math problems, writing a novel, and creating videos and photos seamlessly.
