China’s Ambitious Plan: Humanoid Robots to Reshape the World by 2025
China is set to revolutionize the world with its ambitious plan to develop humanoid robots by 2025, according to a blueprint published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT). The country aims to create advanced bipedal droids capable of carrying out repetitive tasks in farms, factories, and homes, thus alleviating our workload.
The MITT envisions these humanoid robots as disruptive products, similar to the impact of computers, smartphones, and new energy vehicles. In order to accelerate their development, the Chinese government plans to fund more young companies in this field. One promising startup, Fourier Intelligence, hopes to begin mass-producing general-purpose humanoid robots, called the Fourier GR-1, by the end of this year. Standing at a height of five feet and four inches and weighing around 121 pounds, the bot boasts unparalleled agility and human-like movement, thanks to its 40 joints. It can walk at a speed of approximately 3 mph and perform basic tasks.
China isn’t the only country investing in humanoid robots. In the United States, Tesla is refining its own humanoid robot, Optimus, which has made significant progress since its initial prototype was unveiled in 2022. Optimus can even do yoga now. While Tesla has not announced a definitive timeline for its release, CEO Elon Musk has hinted that the $20,000 robot might be ready within the next three to five years.
Another U.S.-based company, Agility Robotics, has established a robot manufacturing facility in Oregon that can produce over 10,000 Digit droids annually. Additionally, Agility Robotics recently announced that Amazon will test Digit for operational use.
Boston Dynamics, renowned for its $75,000 robotic dog Spot, has also developed an agile bipedal robot named Atlas. Atlas has demonstrated its ability to overcome various obstacles, including completing a parkour course in 2021. Although Atlas is not available for purchase and primarily serves as a research platform, its capabilities showcase the advancements in humanoid robotics.
