China’s Cyberspace Administration has launched a new registration service for firms operating in artificial intelligence (AI) services. The announcement, made alongside a new categorisation and legal framework for AI, requires all Chinese companies working in AI to register immediately. The move comes as part of a wider move to regulate the industry to minimise security risks and to monitor applications of the technology. The published list contains 41 firms operating in AI-related fields, with regimes encompassing categories such as large models, image and video generation, voice and speech synthesis, intelligent customer service, as well as facial simulation. Among the listed companies, ByteDance, Meituan, Alibaba affiliates, Tencent, and Baidu are prominent.
