China International Import Expo in Shanghai Showcases Cutting-Edge Technology and Global Partnerships
The 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE) is now underway in Shanghai, China’s major financial and business center. With the participation of 3,400 exhibitors from 154 countries and international organizations, including 289 Global Fortune 500 companies, the expo is set to be a premier platform for showcasing cutting-edge technology and fostering global partnerships.
The event is organized by the Ministry of Commerce, Shanghai Municipality, and the China International Import Expo Bureau. Notably, the China International Import Expo is the only country-level import exhibition in the world. It aims to promote China’s high-level opening-up policies and acts as an international public good.
Among the attendees is a delegation of heads of state institutions led by Shahin Mustafayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan and co-chairman of the Azerbaijan-China Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. This highlights the widespread interest and importance of the expo in strengthening trade and economic ties between nations.
The CIIE is expected to welcome around 394,000 professional visitors, returning to pre-pandemic levels. Of the exhibitors, 64 come from Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries. The expo serves as an avenue to present over 400 new products, technologies, and services, with a particular focus on low-carbon energy and artificial intelligence.
Since its inception in 2018, the CIIE has played a pivotal role in facilitating foreign trade and investment. It has debuted more than 2,000 new products, technologies, and services, aiding in industrial upgrades and improving consumer goods’ quality. By importing advanced equipment and consumer goods, the expo has contributed to the smooth domestic circulation. In addition, it has promoted dual circulation by connecting international exhibitors with their domestic counterparts.
The previous five CIIEs have resulted in tentative deals worth almost $350 billion, further stabilizing foreign trade and investment. This demonstrates the expo’s ability to generate tangible business outcomes and create a positive economic impact.
Running alongside the CIIE is the Hongqiao forum, which focuses on development and openness. The forum aims to promote multilateralism and explore opportunities for collaboration among participating nations.
Looking ahead, the CIIE will continue to serve as a catalyst for high-quality development and high-level opening-up. China aims to expand the spillover effect of various exhibitions, matching high-quality products with enterprises and providing more companies with access to its thriving market.
