China’s Vice-Minister of Education, Wang Jiayi, expressed China’s willingness to engage in international efforts to promote ethical guidelines and governance for artificial intelligence (AI) during the Second Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in Kranj, Slovenia. Wang highlighted that different countries’ AI governance plans, based on their experiences, could serve as a foundation for a global consensus on AI governance.
The forum, themed Changing the Landscape of AI Governance, was attended by over 600 representatives from governments, international organizations, academic institutions, NGOs, and businesses from 67 countries. UNESCO’s Assistant Director General, Gabriela Ramos, praised China’s proactive approach to regulating AI and participating in international initiatives to address AI technology’s negative aspects.
UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, emphasized the need for international cooperation in addressing challenges posed by climate change and the digital revolution. The event also saw discussions on best practices for AI governance, ethical integration of AI in businesses, and the launch of a global observatory for AI ethics by UNESCO in partnership with the Alan Turing Institute and the International Telecommunication Union.
The first annual Global Forum on the Ethics of AI was held in Prague in 2022. The event in Kranj continues to focus on promoting an open, fair, and effective governance mechanism to ensure the benefits of AI for all. The forum participants are motivated to develop AI technologies that prioritize the wellbeing of individuals and societies.
The engagement of various stakeholders at the global forum highlights the growing importance of ethical considerations in the development and deployment of AI technologies. Through collaborative efforts and sharing of best practices, countries aim to shape AI governance frameworks that enhance transparency, accountability, and the ethical use of AI for the betterment of humanity.
