Microsoft President Brad Smith sent a warning to the world on Saturday of the upcoming rivalry by Chinese research organizations and companies when it comes to ChatGPT technology. OpenAI is the biggest investor for the AI-powered chatbot as technology giants Amazon and Google continue to compete for the advancement of Generative AI technology.
According to The Nikkei Asia, Smith stated that the competition among the three leading organizations in the development of AI, with Open AI and Microsoft being at the forefront; besides, there’s Google and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. The gap between the innovation of the three major players is being measured in months, and not years, which speaks volumes of the intensity of the competition.
Generative AI, which is the technology behind ChatGPT, has been creating a buzz in the world for its potential to be used in various industries, from business and art to healthcare and education. However, this technology also has its own issues, including the possibility of it replacing manpower, the risk of dispersing false information, copyright infringement, and even a potential invasion of privacy and leakage of sensitive data.
Microsoft President believes that a more proactive approach is needed, where the technology becomes a tool rather than a weapon, as evidenced by the cyber attacks from nation states being thwarted by the use of AI. Supported by tech companies like Microsoft, nations such as the Ukraine have been able to fend off cyber-attacks against Russia, while AI has been able to successfully detect cyber influence operations and disinformation campaigns in real-time.
The Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has hence emphasized on the need of formulating rules and regulations for the use of AI, which reportedly was discussed between the Prime Minister and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Corporations in Japan have already tapped the application of ChatGPT, with the three largest banks using the technology to help in fewer paper works and answer internal queries. Companies have also developed an AI system based on the ChatGPT platform for policyholders and insurance agents for draft answers to inquiries.
The utilization of ChatGPT is proving to be a great way to combat the labor shortage in the Asian continent. According to the Smith, technology innovation, when done well, can lead to a battle of defense over offense. Smith further explained that the key to success is by combining the best minds of people with the best technologies, which will eventually outplay the enemies of the world’s democracies.
