Chemnitz University of Technology, in collaboration with an international consortium of 30 members from 18 countries, is leading the way in advancing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) through the establishment of a European Center of Excellence for AI Research. This consortium, known as ENFIELD (European Lighthouse to Manifest Trustworthy and Green AI), aims to bring together cutting-edge research, new technologies, and the collective resources of renowned research and industry players in Europe.
With the goal of promoting fundamental research in adaptive, green, human-centered, and trustworthy AI, ENFIELD also seeks to explore ways to enhance the acceptance and implementation of AI applications. Over the next three years, the European Commission will provide more than eleven million euros to support the project, which commenced on September 1, 2023.
Within the ENFIELD project, the Professorship of Distributed and Self-Organizing Systems at Chemnitz University of Technology will concentrate on the realm of trustworthy AI. Professor Dr. Martin Gaedke, leading the contributions to ENFIELD, explains that their focus lies in the development of new solutions for ensuring the future’s trustworthy usage of AI, particularly within critical infrastructures. They intend to emphasize human-centered AI, with a special emphasis on applications in sensitive sectors like healthcare.
The ENFIELD project comprises 18 sub-projects involving a total of 76 researchers. By harnessing the expertise and collaboration of these researchers, ENFIELD is poised to make significant strides towards advancing AI. By leveraging the resources and capabilities of multiple countries, ENFIELD will contribute to shaping the future of AI in Europe and beyond.
Chemnitz University of Technology’s leadership in this endeavor highlights its commitment to groundbreaking research and innovation. This collaboration serves as a powerful platform for fostering advancements in the field and securing a prominent position for Europe in the global AI landscape.
As the project progresses, the outcomes of ENFIELD will not only benefit academic and research communities but also have far-reaching implications for industries and society as a whole. With AI rapidly transforming various aspects of our lives, ensuring its trustworthiness, environmental sustainability, and human-centricity becomes increasingly crucial.
The establishment of the European Center of Excellence for AI Research through the ENFIELD project marks a significant milestone in advancing AI technologies that are not only cutting-edge but also reliable, green, and centered around human needs. This consortium’s collaborative efforts are set to contribute to shaping the future of AI, enabling its widespread acceptance and implementation across diverse sectors, and driving Europe’s position as a global leader in trustworthy and green AI research and development.
