ChatGPT Performance Boost Fuels GPT-4.5 AI Upgrade Rumors
There has been a flurry of activity from artificial intelligence (AI) industry followers on social media this weekend, all centered around the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. Speculation regarding a highly-anticipated update to the bot has grown, fueled by cryptic tweets from the ChatGPT X account and a mysterious response hinting at a potential GPT-4.5 upgrade.
The rumors began with a leaked image on December 14, showcasing a new model of ChatGPT with advanced multimodal capabilities and an updated pricing structure. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman swiftly dismissed these rumors, denying the existence of a GPT-4.5 upgrade.
Nevertheless, the speculation continued to grow over the weekend, with further leaks suggesting the potential arrival of a new GPT-4.5 model in ChatGPT. According to artificial intelligence industry observer Rowan Cheung, there have been notable performance improvements in the past 48 hours, further fueling the rumors.
Users have taken to questioning the AI chatbot itself, asking which model and API it is currently running. OpenAI employee Will Depue referred to the situation as a weird and oddly consistent hallucination. When specifically asked about the model, ChatGPT enigmatically responded with ‘GPT 4.5-turbo.’
In addition to these interactions, multiple reports have surfaced claiming that ChatGPT has undergone a significant upgrade and is now performing better than ever. Further adding to the intrigue, the ChatGPT X account posted cryptic tweets in the form of emojis throughout the weekend, increasing curiosity among followers.
Despite Altman’s denial, Cheung suggests that the recent increase in ChatGPT’s performance may indicate some form of upgrade in progress. However, it appears unlikely that a new version of ChatGPT will be released this week.
As OpenAI and ChatGPT navigate the landscape of AI chatbots, they find themselves playing catchup to Google and its recent release of Gemini. Described as a multimodal chatbot with advanced reasoning, Gemini was unveiled on December 6. However, Google faced criticism when it was discovered that the demo video for Gemini had been doctored.
In other AI-related news, Sacramento State recently launched the National Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Education, positioning itself as one of the pioneering US universities committed to the ethical use and application of AI in education.
French AI firm Mistral also made headlines with the launch of its latest large language model, Mixtral 8x7B. The company claims that this new model already surpasses the performance of GPT-3.5 and Meta’s Llama 2 family.
On a somber note, the shares of Chinese AI giant SenseTime plummeted to an all-time low following the tragic passing of its founder, Tang Xiao’ou, on December 15. Xiao’ou, a prominent AI scientist, succumbed to illness at the age of 55.
As the rumors surrounding a potential GPT-4.5 upgrade persist, AI enthusiasts and industry followers eagerly await further official information from OpenAI. The increased performance of ChatGPT in recent days does hint at the possibility of upgrades in the works, adding to the anticipation surrounding the future evolution of AI chatbot technology.
