As couples approach their wedding dates, new sources of inspiration are coming from unexpected places. ChatGPT, a recently launched AI chatbot, has been used to write wedding vows and promote an inspiring experience for couples seeking help with writer’s block.
Elyse Nguyen, a financial analyst at Qualcomm, was nearing her own wedding date when a friend suggested ChatGPT as a potential solution to her vow-writing woes. Initially approaching the chatbot with a joke prompt, Nguyen found that the output provided her with the essential elements of what should be included in the vows—as well as humorous elements of analogies and alliterations. After making a few edits to the output to add humor and personal touches, Nguyen ended up using a good portion of ChatGPT’s suggestions in her vows.
The AI chatbot’s use for wedding planning has spread to other services, too. The online wedding planning service Joy currently features a ‘Writer’s Block Assistant’ tool that helps users write speeches, thank you cards, and other wedding-related items. Ellen Le, a product manager at a startup, recently utilized the Writer’s Block Assistant to write her own ‘about us’ page and draft directions from San Francisco to her Napa Valley wedding. And, with the permission of their fiance, more couples are using ChatGPT for their vows to help alleviate the stress of planning their wedding.
One such couple is Michael Grinn and Kate Gardiner. Grinn, an anesthesiologist, used ChatGPT to help him craft a traditional Ketubah—a Jewish marriage contract. After requesting some gender equality and intimacy-related language changes, Grinn and his fiance were presented with an agreement they couldn’t disagree with.
Though ChatGPT is a helpful resource for the busy couple, it still has its drawbacks. Users must remain vigilant to ensure the chatbot’s output is crafted of high quality and free of bias and misinformation. Furthermore, the use of AI to craft wedding vows may cause couples to lose out on the deeply personal and spiritual moments found in writing one’s own promises to their spouse.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is seeking to responsibly innovate using AI to advance the wedding and event industry—and has opened up access to the chatbot, paving the way for it to be integrated into various apps and services. From the Writer’s Block Assistant on Joy to ChatGPT’s contributing elements to vows, it’s clear that AI can save couples time, hassle, and stress—while still allowing them to write their own accounts for their special day.
