ChatGPT Weddings: Exploring the Trend of Crafted Vows

Date:

ChatGPT wedding vows are a growing trend. This trend began in November last year with the launch of the AI bot “ChatGPT”, which has since impacted various aspects of daily life. Elyse Nguyen, a financial analyst at Qualcomm, was one of the first people to use the artificial intelligence tool to create wedding vows. She explained that she “inputted the prompt as a joke, and the output was pretty cheesy with personal references to me and my husband”. After which she edited the AI generated text and the prompts to add her own personal humor and details about her partner, resulting in a significant portion of her vows being derived from ChatGPT. This shows how useful the AI tool can be when it comes to relieving the stress associated with writing vows for one’s big day.

There are other alternatives for those who don’t feel like writing their own vows and instead require an artificial intelligence assistant. For example, Ellen Lee used the Writer’s Block Assistant tool on the online wedding planning service Joy, as one of the first companies to integrate with ChatGPT. With this tool, users can write best man and maid of honor speeches, as well as direct their guests with directions, and of course, vows. Lee used this to draft an “about us” page along with creating directions to her Napa Valley wedding, and found it “very delightful” when producing a story on how they met.

The trend has even evolved to the point of some couples asking AI to officiate their vows. Chris Noessel and his husband, Benjamin Maleington, are one of the first couples to take it to this level, with the chatbot reading their vows on April 2, 2018.

Despite how useful ChatGPT has proven to be, not everyone is convinced in using AI for such an important responsibility. Myka Meier, an etiquette consultant and wedding conduct guru, believes using AI is improper, as the words are supposed to set the precedent for the rest of their lives together. In a similar situation, a husband in Hong Kong asked ChatGPT for baby names, but his wife was angry and vented on an anonymous thread on DiscussHK as her husband “doesn’t even care about naming his child.”

Ultimately, AI bots have enabled us to tailor our fictional works with personal references, which come from metaphors, analogies, and alliteration. However, while they can be a valuable assistant, experts advise that one should not solely rely on AI to produce meaningful vows or to name one’s baby, but consider having the officiant say them instead.

Joy is one of the first companies to integrate with ChatGPT. The company is an online wedding planning service, catering to couples and their planning needs, as well as leveraging artificial intelligence to assist in writing of vows and best man/maid of honor speeches. The Writer’s Block Assistant tool is used by couples to craft wedding vows, and to direct their guests with directions and thank you cards.

Elyse Nguyen, a financial analyst at Qualcomm, was one of the first people to take advantage of AI when it came to crafting her wedding vows. After inputting the prompts as a joke, the AI provided output which was cheesy, yet provided “the essence of what vows should incorporate such as promises and structure”. Nguyen then edited the suggestions to add her own personal details and humor, resulting in her using a significant portion of ChatGPT’s suggestions in her vows, which her husband also agreed to use.

Chris Noessel and his husband Benjamin Maleington were also some of the first people to use AI to officiate their vows. On April 2, 2018, their vows were read by a chatbot and was their unique way to honor their relationship.

AI can be a valuable tool in our daily lives, but it should not be relied upon to make important decisions, such as producing meaningful wedding vows, or to name one’s baby. Using AI should be done with caution and with the help and advice of professionals, particularly when it comes to creating a couples’ special moments.
