ChatGPT Users’, Leaked Private Data Due to Open-Source Flaw

Date:

ChatGPT, the groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI, has been taken down for emergency maintenance this week as a result of an open-source library bug causing a data breach. This bug allowed some ChatGPT users to see titles and conversations of other active users, as well as some of their payment information. OpenAI’s Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman took to Twitter to express his deep remorse over this incident.

OpenAI is an American technology company based in San Francisco, California, and was co-founded by tech entrepreneur and investor Sam Altman and world-renowned scientist Elon Musk. OpenAI specializes in developing artificial general intelligence and works to democratize AI as much as possible. Along with Elon Musk, Sam Altman has also co-founded successful tech companies such as Optimizely, Roblox, and Y Combinator, among others. Altman currently serves as OpenAI’s CEO and is dedicated to humanizing AI in order to make it more accessible to everyone.

OpenAI released a statement on Friday providing further updates on the data breach incident. The company further revealed that the incident exposed more private data from some users, including users’ payment information such as their first and last name, email address, payment address, the last four digits (only) of a credit card number, and credit card expiration date. However, OpenAI quickly acted and patched the bug, and communicated with the users affected to let them know that their payment information may have been exposed. OpenAI also outlined several preventive measures to prevent such incidents in the future and expressed their regret and commitment to continue working to rebuild trust.
