ChatGPT sued for spreading misinformation in A.I. defamation cases

Date:

OpenAI, the company behind artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, has been sued by a man from Georgia for defamation. Mark Walters filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit in Gwinnett County, claiming that ChatGPT published libellous information about him as part of an article posted by journalist Fred Riehl. The piece asserts that the AI programme incorrectly claimed that Walters was a plaintiff accused of embezzling money from the Second Amendment Foundation, when in fact Walters held no connection to the case whatever.
The lawsuit challenges the liability of AI for misinformation. Walters claims OpenAI knew that ChatGPT sometimes made up facts, and suggests it should have known the communication to Riehl was false, or that it recklessly disregarded its truthfulness. Legal blogger Eugene Volokh said the case was legally viable, but hard to maintain, and the proposed legislation presented a risk to the US’ First Amendment right to anonymous speech.
