ChatGPT: Security Vulnerabilities and Data Breaches

Date:

Recently, cybersecurity solutions provider Network Assured issued a report on the challenges posed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While its potential benefits are strong, ChatGPT carries a big risk. These risks include phishing scams, data leaks, malware attacks, and other forms of disruption. In an effort to keep users aware of these risks, Network Assured released their findings.

One of the most significant discoveries is that up to 1.2% of ChatGPT users might have been compromised. This took place after it was discovered users were being shown excerpts from other ChatGPT conversations, as well as their financial information. Even though the bug was quickly patched, the damage of identity theft may not be fully known for months.

In this month alone, ChatGPT has been responsible for multiple security risks. At Samsung, staff members experienced data leaks like source code from faulty devices and transcripts of private meetings. Also, there was a 135% increase in novel phishing attacks that used language created by ChatGPT. This language was advanced enough to hold its own against the affected organizations.

The use of ChatGPT didn’t stop there. Fake browser plugins were distributed to over 2,000 users that contained malware. Cybercriminals also used ChatGPT to promote fake DeFi cryptocurrency tokens and scripts that allowed them to bypass ChatGPT’s illegal content filters.

These events alone may not signify the end of the world, but they’re still very serious. Network Assured’s full report can be found here, with detailed breakdowns and charts included.

But it’s also worth noting there is some positive news. AI-powered programs are helping to detect and protect against cyber warfare. This means that users, combined with cybersecurity providers, have the best of both worlds in terms of ChatGPT.
